Son
by Nikki Weyandt

Every morning at dawn
it peeks its brilliant head over the earth
and sees the scampering of humans
living their ego-centric lives.

They scurry around like ants on a hill
running into their own kind
and not stopping to care.

And every day at dawn,
although its beauty is so abundant,
its continually is ignored by millions.

Instead of taking an empty moment in time
to enjoy its peaceful presence,
the humans fill that moment with worry and greed.

It enjoys those with many years
for they do not spend their energy looking for something
that will last but a short time…
they take their energy and look to the sky for something that will change them internally… for eternity.

Throughout the day it wishes it were noticed, just a little,
but still humans lock their eyes
on artificial color illuminating a screen…
instead of the natural color it sends
flowing into the earth every day.

At the end of the day it takes its last look at the beautiful earth
and wishes, once more, that people would
simply take the time to slow down and take a serious look around them.
Maybe then they would appreciate and love it.

Within seconds it is tired of straining to see the troubled earth,
and finally dips its wonderful head back behind the earth in sorrow.
