Fresh Water Jelly Fish
by Neil Berweger

One day, I was swimming in our lake, Spider Lake. I sat down on the dock and looked into the water. I spotted an unusual creature that looked like a jellyfish. I didn't know what it was, so I ran upstairs to get my Dad. By the time we got back, the creature was gone. That same night we went out on our pontoon boat to see if we could find the unusual looking thing. We went out into the middle of the lake and looked into the water. There they were, millions of them, they kept coming and coming up from the bottom of the lake.

We took a pail and scooped a few up and brought them home. The next day I brought them to my Grandma and Grandpa's house. My Grandpa brought me to the fish and wildlife service in Ashland. There we asked what these creatures were. They explained they were freshwater jellyfish and they're only in fifty lakes in the United States. They eat plankton and clean out the lake.

I guess we're lucky to have such fascinating things in our lake.
