Thanks to the Friends of the Evelyn Goldberg Briggs Memorial
Library and a generous donation from the Goldberg Family, the
Evelyn Goldberg Briggs Memorial Library will host its Teen Web
Club during the summer of 2007.
CLUB MEMBERSHIP
Membership in the Teen Web Club is open to all Middle School aged
teens (6th, 7th, & 8th grades) and High School aged young adults (9th,
10th, & 11th grades) in the library’s service
area, including summer visitors as well as attendees of public
school and home school. All members will be encouraged to submit
their original poems, short stories, and short plays or essays for
Web publication year-round. From the membership, 10-15 specially
selected teens will attend a summer workshop in writing at the
library during the summer of 2007. (See workshop descriptions
below.)
Membership applications as well as
2007 summer workshop
applications and literary submission forms for the Teen Web Club
are available at the library and at local public schools.
TEEN WEB CLUB 2007 SUMMER WORKSHOP
For Teens: Five journalism classes, each 3 hours, will be
taught and supervised by local public school teachers Andrea Tuura &
Scott Raaflaub. Students will learn proper style for newspaper
writing, how to conduct an interview, and will cover a beat while
writing pieces for a summer local teen newspaper: The Iron
River Teen Times. 3,000 copies of the Iron River Teen Times
will be published and circulated as part of the July 26 edition
of the County Journal. The Iron River Teen Times will also be
published here on the Teen Web Club’s Web site.
Application forms
available now.
About the teachers: Scott loves
listening to Pearl Jam while reading in his authentic Jamaican
hammock. He looks forward to reading the new Harry Potter this
summer and hopes that Voldemort takes over the world, because he
gets tired of books with happy endings. He's continuing to learn
how to water-ski on one ski and likes running all year 'round...
hopefully without animals chasing him, although he would
definitely be faster then. He's taught 8th grade science and
language arts, along with an environmental class for summer
school and was a university camp counselor for four years. All
of his favorite bands are better than Andie's favorite bands, no
matter what she says!
For Teens and Young Adults:
Original poems, short stories, and short plays or essays are now
being accepted and considered for publication on the Teen Web Club’s
Web site:
http://ironriver.wislib.org/.
The Evelyn
Goldberg Briggs Memorial Library administers the Teen Club Web site
and makes the final decisions about all submissions.
Priority will be given to Teens living
in Iron River and Teens who have and use a Public Library Card.
