A BUMPER CROP
Don’t miss this opportunity to purchase your summer reading at bargain
prices and benefit your library at the same time.
The Friends Book Sale Committee (Audrey and Dottie, that is) have been sifting
through donations from the community that cannot be used in the Library’s
collection and have a wonderful selection waiting for you.
The Book Sale is one day only - Saturday, June 19 at the Library. Hours are
10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Book Sale is our major fund-raising event of the year. Please support it
with your volunteer labor, donations, and purchases.

WHERE DOES IT GO?
The Friends
recently contributed $1,350 to the Evelyn Goldberg Briggs Memorial Library
for the Children’s Summer Reading Program. From pre-school to
teens, plans are in the works for young people’s reading this
summer. Details below.
An additional contribution of $125 will be used for dividers which
will make the Library’s Compact Disk collection more accessible
to patrons. Shelli Listings of Iron River will make the dividers.
NEW FRIENDS OFFICERS AND BOARD MEMBERS ELECTED
At the February meeting, new officers were elected to the Friends of
the Library Board. Audrey Kavajecz has accepted the office of President,
Darlene Anderpont
,Vice President, and Evie Berge, Treasurer. Erica Suo was re-elected
Secretary. Karen Boggess is a new Board member, and Linda Watters
and Mike Tanula will
continue as members of the Board.
The Friends thank Linda Watters, Past President Mike Tanula, Past
Treasurer, and Andrea Tuura past board member for their service to
the Friends and
the community.
A new day and time have been set for future meetings of the Friends
Board. The board will now meet on the third Wednesday of each month
at 6:30
p.m. at the Evelyn Briggs Goldberg Library. All Friends members
are invited to attend.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
The Friends are looking for volunteers to sell tickets at the County Fair. Contact Audrey to volunteer. It’s both fun and rewarding to the Library.
FANTASTIC, FABULOUS FREE PROGRAMS FOR KIDS THIS SUMMER!
Preschoolers and their parents, kids grades K-5, and teens in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade can all take part.
Teen Web Club at the Library
Thanks to the Friends of the Library and a grant from
the Chequamegon Bay Arts Council, the library will
host a
Teen Web Club. Membership
is open
to all aspiring
artists and writers who are in Middle school and in
the library’s
service area.
All members will be encouraged to submit their original
poems, short stories, short plays or essays for Web publication
year-round.
A limited
number
of selected teens will attend Summer Workshops in Web
design taught by Rob Kerr and Creative
Writing taught by Mike Savage at the library during the
summer of 2004.

forms are available at the library, local public schools,
and at
http://ironriver.wislib.org.
The Teen Web
Club web site will debut in August during a Web Release
Party open to the general public.
Discover New Trails at the Library
Parents of preschoolers and kids in grades K-5 are invited
to follow the Lewis and Clark Trail while they read their
way across the
U.S.A. Children
get a marker
that moves across our map of the COUNTRY AS THEY READ
OR ARE READ TO. Every child gets prizes from the Library
Store for
the number
of books
they read
or the number
of minutes their parents read to them. And every child
can attend the Pizza Party hosted by the Iron River Pizza
Parlor
at the end
of summer.
Special Programs
June
5: Bruce
Burnside, musician/composer/historian, presents “Toads
and Frogs,” an engaging interactive 35 minute performance for children
that coordinates with K-3 science curriculum. “Toads and Frogs” focuses
on being respectful to others and the earth.
July 10: “Buttercup” Bill Aubrecht
Stars in “The Animals Love to Boogie.” Bill sings environmental songs
including a few Discovering New Trails ditties. The performance includes discussion,
information about vermicomposting systems, and “live decomposing dudes” for
the kids to check out.
August 7: The Lake Superior Zoomobile visit’s the
library with animals, facts about each animal, hands-on
opportunity,
and a message
about discovering
new animals while Discovering New Trails.
